Vita / Lebenslauf:
I was born in Switzerland and raised in Iran and later, as a teenager, moved to New York City. With my family I have lived or have traveled to the Balkans, Turkey, the borders of the Caucasus, Egypt, Syria, the Persian Gulf, and the ancient frontier lands of Iran and Iraq. In the province of Khuzestan in Iran, where I lived for several years as a child, a gigantic 20th century oil refinery faced high mountains dotted with primeval villages, populated with an ancient people out of prehistory.

Only a few years after arriving in New York City, I went to art school in Northern California. I returned to New York in the 1980s, during which time I exhibited both in the United States and Europe. During the early 1990s, I lived in Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany. While living in Frankfurt, I had the opportunity to show my work at Amerika Haus, Frankfurt/Main and Art Finish Gallery, Frankfurt/Main. Also, during this period I traveled extensively throughout Western and Southern Europe. Currently I live in the Hudson Valley of New York State.

In my work I am making reference to ancient work both pre-historic and historic. The work that engages me includes ancient objects from the Middle East and Asia, the Mediterranean, Africa and Native America. My method is not to copy or make cultural reference to various times and places but rather use images as a departure into a world of imagination that is universal in nature.

Carl Jung often referred to humanity’s psychic commonality. One of my most awe-inspiring experiences was in Spain, where I visited a cave that humans had occupied over 20,000 years ago. Deep inside the cave the walls were covered with images of animals, human hands, and abstract markings. Holding the kerosene lantern and seeing the shadows of our tour group superimposed on the walls had a profound effect on me – that all human beings are connected through time, space, and art even though every attempt is made by us to disconnect from one another. Hopefully my images can in some small measure express my sense of humility and awe at what others have done so long ago.
