Lilian R. Engel was born in Brazil but lived in the U.S. since the age of 2. She grew up in Rhode Island and graduated with a B.A in Technical Theatre/Liberal Arts from Rhode Island College. In 1980 she moved to New York where she practiced scenic art then studied and began working as a graphic designer.
In 1996 Engel began sculpting and that has been her main passion ever since. She studied anatomy drawing and sculpture at the Art Students League of New York where she achieved best of class show recognition and her sculpture was purchased and remains in The Art Students League of New York Permanent Collection. She also earned the Nessa Cohen Memorial Grant there. Engel has been in numerous group exhibitions and was the recipient of the The Calvary Baptist Church Award in 2000. Currently has a studio in Long Island City, NY.
I have been inclined to express myself through art as far back as I can remember. Inspiration comes from many sources in life, by nature, the figure in motion and my reaction to current events. I explore form and movement through space or the spiritual essence in the stillnes of basic forms. I believe the social and political climate of an era is reflected through the artist's visual creations no matter how indirect they may be.
