Bio / Resumee / Statement:
I've done pen and ink drawings for many years. I grew up with a father and sibling artists. My roots are in old school graphic art, illustration, calligraphy, sign painting. Also, I had a healthy exposure to cameras and filmmaking. To me, old school graphic art, film and modern multimedia are inextricably linked via the history of traditional animation. Multimedia is considered the new horizon by many but I don't find it so new. Although, it has been upgraded in many new and innovative ways. My focus on drawing has lead me into classical art studies. In college I further deepened my studies in classical art tradition.
I create my images intuitively. I prefer to think image first than concept first. I feel sensitive about making literal contrived messages. I generally think of my images as ambiguous and existentialist. My thoughts and beliefs come through in my images. My images are often related to science, philosophy and liberal politics concerning individual rights. A favorite subject of mine is gender and sexual issues. Occasionally I venture into Theological subject matter in relation to social/political, moral/ethical issues or my personal experience. On one hand I find religious related subjects a tired subject to illustrate but on the other hand a relevant issue and one that I ponder often.
In my teens and 20's my perspective was very much a Modernist in the sense that I believed in looking for a new art form so my roots are very Modernist. Aesthetically I still have a strong lean towards the minimalist styles favored by Modernism. I relate to the multiple perspective, multiple voice/personality aspect of Post Modernism. You could also include me in the Romanticist category.
I mostly represent the human form. Through most of life my art has been drawing from memory. For about the last ten years I've used outside sources like models and friends as references more regularly. My entry image is done mostly from my imagination. I used some photos of insect wings for reference but the figure is completely from imagination.
Along with pen and ink. I paint with acrylics and watercolors. I also work with a variety of computer software. I make videos and sound/music work.
