Artist Statement
“Thinking is more interesting than knowing, but less interesting than looking” – Goethe
There are a lot of interesting things to like about painting, its history, the complex workings of its exhibition, its long debated formal qualities. But what I find most compelling is that each viewer comes to a painting with certain assumptions as to its function, its criteria and therefore its value.
These assumptions play a significant role in how one perceives an image. They make the viewer evaluate landscape based on its escapist qualities, portraiture on its likeness, architecture on its precision and so on. As an image-maker I am fascinated by the viewer’s reliance on these patterns of perception, and the aim of my art is to explore this relationship between viewer and art object in a new way.
I feel it is my obligation to provide the viewer with an experience that reflects not only on the psychology of the artist but also on the perceptual patterns of the culture. I am particularly interested in inviting interaction and making art that questions the long-standing assumptions of genres.
Just like my common subject matter of cultural props, my work fails if it is elitist or inaccessible. It succeeds when it is engaging and causes reflection on the very cultural process of seeing. This work is not about interpreting what the artist intends but is about empowering the viewer to find their own playful narratives.
