Frieda Block Artist Statement
This body of work communicates uneasy psychological and spiritual conditions through personal symbolism and a reinterpretation of traditional religious iconography. Many of the pieces contain anatomically incorrect, missing, or dismembered body parts to signify a lack of wholeness and broken self image. The saturated hues and cartoon like characters initially conceal or distract the darkness and anguish that the figures experience. Personal pain is invoked and exhibited in the form of strange creatures. My work manifests the struggle to maintain a divine perspective while wrestling with internal conflicts. These themes are both personal and universal, since they reflect the human condition.
There is often a tug of war between applying a spiritual resolution to the problem or engaging in a narcissistic preoccupation with self. Each painting holds the possibility of redemption from impaired emotional states of isolation, abandonment, insecurity, sorrow, and self loathing. It asks the viewer to identify with these states, yet look beyond them to the possibility of healing and integration.
