Kunstart: Malerei
Stil: Gegenständlich

Statement:
In 2001, while still working in the corporate arena, a gallery owner in Houston became interested in Robert’s poetry and offered to sell it if he could find a way to display it. Faced with this challenge, Robert received some technical advice and started experimenting; he soon discovered ways in which language could be fused with composition to display a higher form of expression, and this kept him going until he developed sufficient skill to surrender to the call of art.

Touched with a wry sense of humor, fragments of quizzical, sensual verse can sometimes be found scrawled graffiti-style across the page, or deeply embedded within layers of color. By combining language and form, Robert learned to juxtapose the instinctual and rational, the raw and refined, the abstract and tangible, which led to a disposition that impacted his later work. Using acrylics and oils, sometimes combined with resin, plaster, graphite, paper and even flame, Robert now crafts conceptual and figurative abstracts primarily inspired by the changing face of nature and the human condition.

Often focused on creation, some paintings evoke images of God, religion, evolution and the origins of man. Although called spiritual, Robert does not see his art that way – he tends to concentrate on events that occur within layers upon layers of interdependent systems and processes, creating multiple nodes of commonality, and employs material, technique and vision to convey such commonalities in ways to which the viewer can relate and possibly be inspired. The more encompassing the subject matter, the more challenging the commonalities are to portray, until finally artistic language breaks down and art becomes as abstract as the concept itself. Somewhere between these material and immaterial worlds Robert’s art stands out.
