Smael
Lives and works in Rio de Janeiro.
Self-taught, Smael started to make graffiti on the streets of Rio de Janeiro in 1999.
Though but a hobby at the beginning, he soon developed a very personal style and highly original concepts. An art gallery discovered him in 2003. At that time his work was the most prominent in the city. The entry in the new art circuit paved the way for the development of a new language, making him experiment new supports, beyond
urban walls and spaces. His earliest canvases can in fact be traced to this period. By interacting with new surfaces (refrigerators, cars and clothes) he transformed those surfaces into painting.
His approach to graffiti has always been innovative, provocative. In na environment which he felt had stagnated, Smael explored the new possibilities of street language by creating a personal image that distinguished him from the others.
His work reveals strong graphic vitality and chromatics.
The contours provide structure to the composition as a whole while conversing with the contrasts of colour. In addition, line and colour construct new visual planes that are the result of the extraordinary dynamics of forms the artists creates by stimulating our gaze to follow the rhythms of his provocations.
