Statement:
Throughout my painting work, I have always had a belief that visually appreciated/recognized figures and images possess communicative meanings. In other words, the ?image? within the painting functions as a symbol and each image together forms a narrative relationship inside and/or outside of the painting. Therefore, the painting becomes, not simply a visual expression, but a ?story?. This can be also interpreted as the painting extending its position into an ?attributive/predicative/descriptive/narrative? arena. What I intend to express through such communicative process in my painting are ?a human being as an organism?, ?a human being experiencing continuous changes? and ?a kinetic human being?. In order to convey this message in my thesis, I have examined such contents as ?a human being as a passage to communication (communicative medium) and ?descriptive structures in the painting?, along with more conventional matters such as the ?curved lines? and ?atypical figures? used in my work.
The subject matter of my painting is ?a human being?. We often encounter a variety of human appearances and features through history of art and paintings. Throughout the long history of artwork, ?a human being? has been undoubtedly one of the subject matters that were most often employed as artists. Then, why paintings ? of course, the same applies to other areas of art ? so often attempt to express human beings? The answer to this may be that a human being is the only creature that can create a story. A human being is an organism with an ability to give meanings of life and existence just by being itself and therefore, he/she possesses the power to place him/herself in the center and forms his/her own world. In a similar way, such power enables construction of a unique world within the painting. This power can be also said to continuously provide a communication system between the artist, the painting and the audience. In other words, I have tired to bring out a ?story? from the painting by continuously composing human figures and their conditions/situations/circumstances. The ?story? is expressed in the style revealed in the organization method of the painting i.e. in visual forms, and in my work, I have analyzed the visual forms of the painting using lines and figures. ?Lines-Figures? have been chosen as the most appropriate structures in conveying the subject of my painting and the human beings who have been formed through such structures create meanings as a wholly new image and/or a symbol.
To sum up, my work can be referred to as a reproduction of human images composed of ?lines and figures? through a variety of drawing techniques. Human figures, the most important features of the painting, are always expressed as curved lines and this method has been chosen to maximize the organic characteristic of a human being. The main story, i.e. what I am intending to communicate, in my painting lies in movements of a human being and I have used curves to express such movements. ?Movements of a human being? not only refers to insignificant/trivial/small physical movements but also subtle changes in emotions and thinking.
The thesis is aimed to help profound understanding of my work through studying the subject of my painting, the ?human figures?.
