Statement:
Creating my own art is the best way to connect with myself. When I work on my art, I face myself honestly, I discover something new about me, I know myself better, I confirm myself objectively, and I embrace myself even if what I find in/about me was something hard to accept. Through creating my art, I experience this process over and over again. It's not easy for me. In fact, it's a tough struggle. But I have come to realize that this struggle leads me to my OWN art and makes my spirit stronger and deeper. And I can be confident in myself. I make my own art to live, to keep on developing as a person and to feel alive. If my passion or my thoughts like this can be understood by someone through my art and if my art encourages or inspires someone, it would be so fantastic.
Vita / Lebenslauf:
-Born in Japan
-Was educated metal craft design at an art university and a graduate school in Tokyo
-Worked as a designer of ironworks in Tokyo after graduation
-Moved to Seattle in 2004 to study art and design
-Have worked as a designer of ironworks in Seattle, US
Metal, especially iron, is basic material of my art. Making art with metal has made me feel free from sense of volume and mass and has allowed the form of my art to spread into space freely. Also, I have become spatially aware and sensitive to space in my art work. When I think about form of my work, I also consider the space around it. That's why I like to walk around my art because they have many different appearances from every angle. I divide and enclose space with lines and surfaces or put them to cross by focusing on the positional relations between elements, so that viewers can be aware of space itself and they can feel invisible extra expanse into empty space around my work. I describe this as to open up or to create new space. This is what I want to do with my art.
