Statement:
My work is a pastiche of memories, personal ideals, elemental properties, and pockets of energy whether they reference a nebula in space or an explosion in Iraq. Other experiences like abuse come out in my work when they need to. Recently the referenced themes have been relating to environmental issues that change our social outlook. Feeling unsettled with the extremes of feminine and masculine expectations leads me to art that comes out in a graceful yet sometimes brash quality. I feel comfortable with transparent materials because of my childhood growing up in a cabinet shop and continuing to a career as a high-end furniture finisher. Now I strive for something intellectually challenging. That challenge is most satisfying for me when balancing the figurative and abstract while still alluding to a narrative. This half recognizable collaboration gives me a reference point to continually build a language for these constructed worlds. I have switched from oil to various consistencies of acrylic on raw surfaces attempting to enhance my personal connection I feel with natural elements. Then it is sealed into the surface beneath layers of clear gesso, paint, and emulsions, giving the paintings their own space and environment different from the next.
Vita / Lebenslauf:
Erika Fortner began her training and career at the internationally renowned California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, CA, where she attended the CSSSA (California State Summer School for the Arts- Innerspark) honors art program awarded to the top artists in the state. During that time, she received various awards including the Seal of California, Honorable Mentions from the U.S. Senate. Some of her works were published in the Back Alley Arts Magazine while a collection of her paintings debuted in a 2004 film released under The Asylum Production Company. She continued her training by becoming a digital animator while continuing her families business in high-end cabinetry and finishing. After leaving California, Erika attended the highly respected Pratt Institute of Fine Arts to obtain her BFA in Painting. There she was recognized on the President�s List and included in many collegiate shows, exhibited at Medium NYC in Chelsea, and had her first solo exhibit in September 2008 with the Terra Gallery in Columbus, Ohio. Currently, Erika is painting out of Berlin, Germany, and works for Julie Mehretu as a Finish Consultant and Artist Assistant.
