Statement:
For several years, I've concentrated on the so-called “texture paintings”. In 2000, I started exploring the use of heavily textured under painting . Earlier paintings, until 2005, usually contained images. My imagery loosely based on simple, symbolic insignia, geometric, and rock-art motifs. Eventually, my interest shifted away from the imagery, and towards the surface colors and patterns. I have reduced the imagery in the newer paintings to a simple system of lines, or none at all.
Although this approach to making a painting certainly is not my invention; I have spent considerable time refining this technique. It is a slow and methodical process. First, I use a variety of materials to build up the surface texture, my primary medium if this is a polymer based wood glue, which is thin enough to drip or pour, but thick enough to create a raised surface. As many as five layers will be applied to a single piece. Paper, string, found objects and epoxy putty often are included in these base layers. I work quickly and spontaneously on the under painting. After drying, the textured underlayer is primed, and I begin to add color. Usually I will start with transparent glazes, and a finished painting will have as many as twenty. I like the brilliant, saturated color that results. Between glazes, I dry-brush the raised surfaces with a contrasting color ; often, I will use fluorescent pigments here. Sometimes, for emphasis, I'll paint specific raised surfaces with a small brush. This pulling up the surface and then glazing it back, can go on for weeks. I am satisfied when the entire painting displays a combination of an extremely intricate surface and an almost unearthly , intense color.
