The flying colours in this painting appear to trace the path where the racers had been moments earlier and give the impression of wind and speed. The blurred colours coming off the clothing of the racers gives the feeling of movement and urgency. My technique of painting realistic figures against an impressionistic background should give you the feeling that you are part of the race, not just a spectator.
